On my way home from autocross and my power steering pump exploded oil EVERYWHERE. Fantastic. Not difficult to fix but I’ll have to drive the Sentra until a new part gets here and sacrifice $155 to the Gods of Bullshit. Fuck me and fuck this shitty luck. The universe could cut me a break now that I got a reliable low-ish mileage car but no. This shit. Autocross videos coming later. There is opposite lock.

Bro I think you’re just cursed.

Just de power the rack.

At least it didn't happen on the way to autocross

This has not been a good OPPO weekend

On my daily driver/only car? Hell naw.

Oooh, ouch. Hit and run?

This is the most popular theory.

Nope probably worse, family. My cousin backed into me.

A beige Camry will break the curse.

Agreed. Bad oppo karma this weekend

So, got that PPI done?

Dude, it’s a Miata. It’s no struggle to drive without power steering, especially with factory width tires.
I had my belt break on a dab of Oppo. I drove for a while without a p/s, a/c belt until I read that running an unplugged rack with no belt can ruin the rack over time. it was cheaper and easier to just add the belt again.

Did it suddenly get dark in here?

Nah, I’ve been exactly here in my life. Remember that Outback I owned for a month? The one that drank oil almost as fast as gas, and when trying to replace the valve cover gasket the bolts sheltered off? I should have gotten a PPI. Lost $3k on that “deal”. We live and learn. I feel bad about this, and damn what a run of luck, but something should be learned from this.
Upside, it’s a Miata, so it’s stupid easy to fix. Check a junk yard for a cheap pump?

My S600 has developed a coolant leak somewhere...

I think its the full moon or something - this weekend has just been junk, topped off by me being skilled enough to light a jar of peanut butter on fire in the microwave.

Make sure it has the Bump too.

My right turn indicator filaments also exploded everywhere today on the way back from autocross.
May I offer my sympathetic condolences.

I had a car without power steering once

I wouldn’t give 101 pennies for that car.

The CRX was fine. At slow speed it was a little heavy, but once rolling it was lighter than my Mustang.

Damn. There been w couple more bad luck posts since this too

This... was not. Going through a ramp took an unexpected serious amount of muscle. The Nissan with no power steering? Just fine. One finger steering. For some reason the Miata was obscenely heavy.

I drove it around while the Miata is down. Steers just fine without PS. Honestly with the new suspension that thing is damned livable.

That’s actually impressive

Turns out the loctite on a bolt fried and the bolt backed out and a bunch of stuff separated and spewed oil everywhere. Got some loctite and more PS fluid, gonna fix it tomorrow.

Fair enough.

205 width 240 treadwear Nittos and I think my alignmend is a bit screwed up. It was a BEAR without PS.
But yeah, I’m not driving it with it not working because, as you said, a powered rack will eat itself if it doesn’t have oil being cycled through it.
![]() 09/18/2016 at 22:44 |

PPI wouldn’t have found this. Turned out to be a bolt that somehow backed out and let the power steering assembly spew oil everywhere. Looked fine before. Hell, looks fine now even though it’s not even finger-tight.

So do you think the pump is bad, or can you just bolt it back in and fill’er up?
![]() 09/19/2016 at 07:55 |

Looks like I can just bolt it back together

This is very good news. Invest in some Lock-Tite!
